We arrive in Harrogate before dinner.
Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway & Skipton River Cruise
We begin with a single journey on the Embsay and Bolton Abbey steam railway through the picturesque Yorkshire Dales. We stop in Skipton, 'Gateway to the Dales' for lunch and free time to browse the attractive high street. This afternoon we have a relaxing cruise on a traditional canal narrow boat through the countryside with tea/coffee and biscuits served on board.
Spend a day at leisure discovering Harrogate with its magnificent Victorian buildings, colourful banks of flowers, broad tree-lined boulevards and wide-open spaces. Reminders of the Regal era include the 19th century Royal Pump Room Museum, housing the original sulphur well and the Royal Baths Assembly Rooms, built in 1897, where the Turkish baths are still in daily use. Be sure to treat yourself to tea at the world-famous Betty's Tea Rooms or for garden lovers there are the Valley Gardens and the 68 acres of RHS Harlow Carr Botanical Gardens.
Thirsk & Castle Howard
Today we head to the market town of Thirsk, known as 'Darrowby' in the TV series All Creatures Great and Small. Here there is time to explore and perhaps visit the 'World of James Herriot', a museum converted from his original house and surgery. We continue to Castle Howard, still owned and lived in by the Howard family, this spectacular house and gardens were the film location for Brideshead Revisited.
Departing after breakfast we make our way home.
