Take a scenic journey via Carsington Water to Wirksworth, known as the Gem of the Peak. Little has changed over 150 years in this historic market town and it is a fascinating place to explore with its narrow streets, remarkable buildings and maze of interesting alleyways. This afternoon enjoy a journey on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, a 9-mile long heritage railway running through one of Derbyshire's most lovely and unspoilt valleys. The railway, its trains, carriages and stations are being lovingly restored by an enthusiastic and knowledgeable group of volunteers who give up their spare time to the railway. We meet the coach in Duffield and travel back to the hotel.Br, D
The Peak District is renowned for its beautiful scenery and quaint towns. This morning drive to Chesterfield with its famous Crooked Spire of St Mary's Church. Then head to the picturesque old market town of Bakewell, set in an enviable location on the banks of the Wye in the heart of the Peak District National Park, and famous for its Bakewell Puddings. Whilst here, visit the original Bakewell Pudding Shop and try one for yourself! Later, take in Buxton, nestled amongst the hills of Derbyshire, the capital of the High Peak and the highest English town above sea level. Blessed with stunning scenery, magnificent architecture, a wealth of shops and a thriving arts scene, it is also home to the world-famous spa water.Br, D
Head to Calke Abbey, an 'un-stately home' where time has stood still. Once home to the Harpur Crewe family, Sir Harpur Crewe turned his back on public life, wanting to live in isolation. He shunned many modern trappings - motor cars and bicycles were banned on the estate (he preferred horse and carriage), electricity was not installed, and only after his death was the ancient plumbing system replaced. When the National Trust took over the property in 1985, many of its rooms had been abandoned for decades but rather than restore them, it was decided to preserve them. Wander through the mansion to discover abandoned rooms, peeling wallpaper and a vast collection of strange and unique objects, exactly as they were found.Br, D
After breakfast we make our way back to the local area.
