Today, we travel to the majestic, 17th Century, red sandstone Drumlanrig Castle (the 'Pink palace'). The breath-taking views across the Nith Valley convinced the first Duke of Queensberry to build his ancestral home here. The grand reception rooms, magnificent staircases, ornate period features and cosy parlours give us an intimate taste of life through the centuries.
We drive to the centre of Sir Walter Scott Country and visit Bowhill House, home to the Buccleuch family for over 250 years. Bowhill is the epitome of a family home, with walls adorned with beautiful tapestries and paintings by many renowned artists, including Canaletto, and we will be given a private guided tour of the house and gardens (2 hours), the walled garden and greenhouse that are not usually open to the public.
Please note: The Minstrel Tearoom is unavailable for refreshments on the date of our visit.
This morning, we visit the award-winning HM Factory Gretna where the majority of munitions were produced during WW1 by women from all over the UK and further afield, determined to do their bit for the war effort. We explore their world and how they were rewarded with excellent housing, leisure activities and a generous wage. Returning to Gretna Green we explore the charming Famous Blacksmiths Shop, the historic hotspot for elopements! The blacksmiths cottage and workshop sit virtually untouched and you can easily imagine those fleeing lovers awaiting the moment when the Blacksmith Priest strikes the Anvil and declares "Under the ancient rights and laws of Scotland you are now man and wife."Br, D
