Day 2

Our guided coach tour begins with a crossing of the causeway to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, the epicentre of Christianity in Anglo Saxon times, and the birthplace of the Lindisfarne Gospels, one of the world's most precious books. Returning to the mainland we then take a single journey on the Heatherslaw Light Railway, England's most northerly steam-hauled railway. We round off our day by visiting Etal and Ford, two of the prettiest villages in Northumberland where we take in Lady Waterford Hall, awarded "Best Hidden Gem" for the pretty watercoloured murals and fascinating stories of Lady Waterford's life including her friendship with Queen Victoria and John Ruskin, one of Britain's most influential watercolourists.

Day 3

Today we enjoy a one hour cruise aboard the Prince Bishop River Cruiser. This truly scenic cruise passes many of the city's most celebrated sights, the Cathedral, the city's bridges, castle and many of the Durham University buildings. All cruises are accompanied by a lively and informative guide so you can get the most out of what there is to see.

Day 4

We make our way to Chillingham Castle, a 13th century, Grade I star-listed stronghold in Northumberland, with its fine rooms, gardens, lakes, fountains and tea rooms for a guided tour. The castle has an extraordinary ownership bloodline which runs back to the 1200s! Please note: As this is a 600 year old castle, this property is not suitable for people with mobility restrictions. There is also spiral stairs to negotiate (approx. 20-25 steps). We have free time after the tour to explore the estate further at your own pace.
