Lindisfarne, Heatherslaw Light Railway & Lady Waterford Hall
Our guided coach tour begins with a crossing of the causeway to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, the epicentre of Christianity in Anglo Saxon times. Returning to the mainland we then take a single journey on the Heatherslaw Light Railway, England's most northerly steam-hauled railway. We then by visit Etal and Ford, two of the prettiest villages in Northumberland where we take in Lady Waterford Hall, awarded "Best Hidden Gem" for the pretty water coloured murals and fascinating stories of Lady Waterford's life including her friendship with Queen Victoria and John Ruskin, one of Britain's most influential watercolourists.
This morning we visit Newcastle-upon-Tyne for free time to explore the city's many attractions such as the Discovery Centre (free entry). The museum tells the story of life in Newcastle and Tyneside, from the area's renowned maritime history to fashion. We meet at the Quayside for a one hour Quay-to-City cruise from the Newcastle City Marina (5 mins walk from the pontoon which can be steep). This cruise offers you a fantastic opportunity to view the landmarks of the famous city from the river and to enjoy the spectacular panorama of the Tyne Gorge including all seven bridges.
We head to Chillingham Castle for a guided tour and further time to explore at your own pace. This 13th century, Grade I star-listed stronghold has fine rooms, gardens, lakes, fountains, tea rooms and an extraordinary ownership bloodline which runs back to the 1200s! Please note: As this is a 600-year-old castle, some areas may not be suitable for people with mobility restrictions such as spiral stairs (approx. 20-25 steps). In the afternoon, we head to Alnwick where you have the afternoon to explore the local area at your own pace.
We depart after breakfast and make our journey homeward.Br
