Cambridge & New Year's Eve Celebrations
Cambridge is most widely known for its university founded in 1209, which has been consistently ranked one of the top five universities in the world. Archaeological finds have dated as far back as the bronze age and following the Roman invasion Cambridge became an important military settlement. Today, Cambridge is at the heart of the high-technology centre known as Silicon Fen - a play on Silicon Valley and the fens surrounding the city. We head back to the hotel to prepare for tonight's New Year's Eve Gala Dinner and musical entertainment.
We have a late start today, as the morning is free to explore the area or enjoy the hotel facilities. This afternoon we take a drive through the countryside to the historic city of Ely, the second smallest city in England. View the 12th century Ely Cathedral known locally at the 'Ship of the Fens' due to its unique shape and Octagon Tower. Or take a look at the 17th century house of famous resident Oliver Cromwell (unfortunately the house will be closed during our visit).
We depart the hotel and arrive back in the local area during the afternoon.Br
