Just a short walk from the centre of Chester, this is one of the oldest hotels in the UK, built in 1860. Find elegant style with quirky touches combined with its traditional origins. There is a cosy restaurant, traditional bar and lounge and a courtyard terrace. The hotel has a lift.

Day 1

We arrive at our hotel before dinner.


Day 2

Today, we explore the beautiful, historic city of Chester which has the most complete city walls and largest Roman Amphitheatre in Britain, plus a 1000-year-old Cathedral and 700-year-old unique shopping rows. We explore at leisure before our 30-minute river cruise on the River Dee, after which we take a self-guided tour of Medieval Chester Cathedral.

Day 3

Today, we visit Tatton Park, set in 1,000 acres of beautiful parkland. We'll be accompanied on an entertaining tour by the Edwardian servants, looking at life "below stairs". Stroll around the spectacular 50-acre gardens before we make our way to Knutsford, the inspiration and setting for Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford. Elizabeth Gaskell lived in Knutsford for many years and is buried in the churchyard and we can learn more about the 'real' Cranford during our visit to the Knutsford Heritage Centre.

Day 4

Visit Port Sunlight, the village that William Hesketh Lever built for his Sunlight Soap factory workers in 1888. Here, we meet our guide for a 1-hour tour around the village, after which we visit the Port Sunlight Museum, Lady Lever Art Gallery and tea room before we make our way to Ness Botanic Gardens, where 64 acres of spectacular gardens offer stunning views over the dramatic Dee Estuary.

This morning we make our way back home.
