A Steaming Adventure

A Steaming Adventure

The Bluebell Railway was one of the first preserved heritage lines in the country resulting in one of the finest collections of vintage steam locomotives and carriages, many of which were preserved straight out of service from British Railways.

This day out starts at Sheffield Park Station, which was built in 1882 by the London Brighton and South Coast Railway. This station was really built to serve Lord Sheffield who owned the large house and estate about a mile away. Here you have free time to explore the SteamWorks! exhibition. Situated in the locomotive shed, the SteamWorks! exhibition uses touchscreen displays, information boards, and interactives to bring the science and mechanics of steam to life. The star of the show is an interactive model of a locomotive. Based on the Terrier Class locomotive ‘Stepney’ (as featured in the Thomas the Tank Engine book series), this special ‘engine’ features a display showing how the engine’s boiler works, and, as a bonus, a special driving experience simulator in the cab will enable you to experience what it’s like to drive Stepney on the Bluebell Railway. You’ll also be able to get up close to some of the beautiful locomotives on display. Special walkways and platforms will enable you to examine and wonder at the engineering involved and even let you climb onto the footplates of some of the engines. (Visits to the exhibition is included in your entrance ticket).

Once you board the steam train, travel down the tracks as you are served a Ploughman’s lunch. Tuck in to your lunch, before arriving at East Grinstead. Once you return to Sheffield Park Station, re-join your coach and make your way to a lovely local tea room. Here you will be served cream tea which consists of two scones, cream, strawberry jam and an unlimited supply of tea.
