Visit to the International Bomber Command Centre
We make our way to Lincolnshire arriving in time to settle in with tea and biscuits on arrival.
Today we have time to explore the town of Grantham, originally known for its engineering heritage and is recognised as the birthplace of Baroness Margaret Thatcher. We return to the hotel where following dinner, you have the unmissable opportunity to engage in a talk of Lincoln's heritage and highlights from a keen local prior to our visit tomorrow.
Lincolnshire is home to the International Bomber Command Memorial– the only place in the world where all Bomber Command casualties can be found including Air Crew, Ground Crew and support staff, over 58,000 individuals. Marvel at the 31 metre tall memorial spire, the UK’s tallest war memorial, and walls that will eventually feature the names of all26,296World War II Bomber Command aircrew that so bravely lost their lives whilst serving with 1 and 5 Groups during the Second World War. At the top of Canwick Hill, we begin with a warming tea or coffee with biscuits, after which a knowledgeable guide will personally escort you around the Exhibition. Following the talk, feel free to explore the 10 acre garden and Spire at your own leisure and see if you can spot a family name on one of the 30 memorial walls. We spend the remainder of the day in the stunning city of Lincoln, which features gems of aviation history at its very best, the city is also crowned by Lincoln Cathedral, one of Europe’s finest examples of Gothic architecture.
We make our way to Stamford which offers a quintessential English heritage experience combined with an architectural legacy which has drawn innumerable film companies for classics such as Pride and Prejudice and Middlemarch. Having been declared an outstanding area of architectural or historic interest that is of national importance this little town has more than 600 listed buildings of mellow limestone – more than half the total for the whole county!
After a leisurely breakfast, begin your homeward journeyBr
