We make our way to Arlington Court, an unexpected jewel on the edge of Exmoor. The estate has been home to the Chichester family for more than 500 years and here we uncover the secrets of this exceptionally well-preserved regency house, dwell in the tranquility of the evergreen gardens and luxuriate in the pomp and circumstance of the Speaker’s State Coach. The glorious, gilded carriage served the powerful and their esteemed guests for over 300 years and is currently on loan from the Houses of Parliament, further enhancing the collection of Arlington Court’s very own carriage museum. The afternoon is reserved for a leisurely return to Ilfracombe through Bideford, complete with its thriving shopping and working harbour and North Devon’s premier town of Barnstaple on the Taw Estuary, boasting the famous Pannier Market and Butchers Row.
A free day in Ilfracombe with its picturesque harbour which is steeped in maritime history, from grand Victorian hotels to the old working harbour boasting some of North Devon's nicest restaurants. There is plenty to discover with a lively scene surrounding the old harbour, enjoy the spectacle of a proper working fishing boat or watch the gig crews practice their sport. Why not have a light lunch before spending the afternoon strolling through the town centre with its historic core of Victorian houses or return to the hotel during the afternoon for a cream tea.
A full day tour on the coach through Exmoor National Park with its unique landscape of moorland, woodland, valleys and farmland lies ahead. Where high cliffs plunge into the Bristol Channel and cosy pubs and tearooms offer delicious local produce. En-route highlights include the twin towns of Lynmouth and Lynton, Minehead and Dunster, all competing to offer the most invigorating combination of salty sea-air and a bountiful British country side.
After breakfast this morning, we bid our farewells and make our way home.
