We travel east to Dover for the short sea ferry crossing to Calais and then onto our overnight hotel in Saarbrucken.
We continue our journey through Germany and cross the border into Austria to arrive in Feldkirch.
Today we travel on the world famous 'Glacier Express'. For many it's the highlight of the holiday and an opportunity to experience some breathtaking alpine scenery. We travel from our hotel to the high ski resort of Andermatt where you can take some photos before boarding the train. The journey starts with the spectacular climb up to Oberalp, which is the highest point on the entire Glacier Express route, then gradually descends through the stunning Conches Valley, with views of the Aletschorn Massif peaks, before finally at arriving Chur, which is central Switzerland's largest town.
A day at leisure in Feldkirch. Why not take a stroll into town to discover the medieval old quarter with its lovely narrow winding streets and impressively preserved architecture. The gothic cathedral of St Nicholas is remarkable and the old Market Place might be recognisable to James Bond fans, since it was here that Daniel Craig was filmed driving through the town for the movie ‘Quantum of Solace’.
We visit the tiny principality of Lichtenstein with a remarkable 2000 year history of wine making! Our first stop will be at the Hofkellerei Wine Cellar of the Prince of Lichtenstein where we enjoy a cellar tour and wine tasting experience. We then visit Vaduz, where there will be time for lunch. The area between the government district and the town hall is pedestrianised and The "Städtle" in the centre really does have everything, from modern art and historical collections to outdoor cafés, restaurants and boutiques.
Sadly we say a fond farewell to Austria as we commence our journey north through Germany to our overnight hotel in Saarbrucken.
After breakfast, we continue to Calais for our return ferry to the UK and home.
