We make our way to Colchester to arrive at our hotel in time to settle in and relax before dinner.
This morning we visit the breathtaking gardens created by ten times Chelsea Gold Medal winner, Beth Chatto. The Gardens were created in 1960, emerging from an overgrown wasteland of brambles, parched gravel and boggy ditches, and have been transformed into inspirational and informal gardens, using plants adapted by nature to thrive in different conditions. During the Gardeners Tour we are given an in-depth insight into the philosophy and history of Beth Chatto and her gardens. We spend the rest of the day in Colchester, the oldest recorded town in the country. From a Roman Temple, Norman Castle and medieval timber framed houses to Victorian architectural splendour, there is plenty for us to explore at our leisure.
This morning, we will enjoy a half day ‘step-on’ guided tour of Constable Country, which will include Dedham Vale, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the area where John Constable lived and did most of his paintings, the ‘chocolate box village’ Lavenham, known as England’s finest Medieval village, and Sudbury, birthplace of Thomas Gainsborough. In the early afternoon, we make our way to Tiptree which is famous for its preserves. Once there, we will enjoy time in the visitor centre (free entry) where we learn more about the history of the village and the making of different preserves
After breakfast we travel to the delightful medieval market town of Saffron Walden. A market has been held here since 1141, and market days are on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Beyond the market place, there are many independent shops and eating places to choose from. Don’t miss the beautiful Bridge End Garden, a restored Victorian garden with a wonderful yew hedge maze and sunken Dutch Garden. We then make our way to Audley End House & Gardens. Built in the 1600s and lived in until 1948, this Jacobean mansion has been re-dressed to evoke its Victorian heyday both above and below stairs. We can then discover the stunning ‘Capability’ Brown landscaped gardens and visit the horses in the working stable block before travelling back to our hotel.
We begin our homeward journey after breakfast.
