River cruise in Canterbury

Escorted throughout

Day 1

We make our way to Kent to arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 2

Today we visit Ightham Mote, nestled at the foot of a deep valley, this moated 14th-century manor house boasts a great display of bluebells in the spring, especially in Scathes Wood. As well as enjoying the bluebells in the woodland, take time to see the garden, which occupy fourteen acres and have a sequence of water features running throughout. Without a famous plant collection, garden design or design style associated with them, the gardens have developed (like the house) with the ideas of each successive owner.

Day 3

We make our way to Canterbury where we enjoy a river cruise. On our 40 minute trip you will be taken up to a small Franciscan island at one end of the city, which is also known as The Greyfriars. The island is home to a wonderful little chapel from the 13th century which spans the river, and is the oldest example of Franciscan architecture in the country. Passing under the 12th century Eastbridge Hospital and the King's Bridge (1134), we continue down river past some industrial buildings from the medieval period, including The Old Weavers House, The Kings Mill, and the Cromwellian iron forge. After some wonderful views of Canterbury Cathedral, the tour then passes through the Dominican priories which were built by the Blackfriars in the 14th century, and ends up in a peaceful garden area, that was the site of the old Abbots Mill in the city. We then return, passing The Marlowe Theatre, to our starting point which is home to the infamous ducking stool! The rest of the day will be at leisure to explore the city further at your own pace.
