After collection from home, we head to The Savill Garden, one of Britain’s greatest ornamental gardens. Developed under the patronage of Kings and Queens, it was created in the 1930s by Sir Eric Savill as a woodland garden. Showcasing native oak, beech and sweet chestnut trees, visitors can journey through 35 acres of interconnecting gardens featuring distinctive plants and bursts of seasonal colour. We continue to our hotel, where the rest of the day will be at leisure.
We start with a visit to Columbia Road Flower Market, where on Sundays the street is transformed into an oasis of foliage and flowers. Everything from bedding plants to 10-foot banana trees are up for grabs. Then visit Eltham Palace. Recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, it was once the biggest and most visited Royal residence of its time, but by 1656 it was in decline, and in the 18th century it was recorded as a picturesque ruin. However, in the 1930s Stephen and Virginia Courtauld bought and transformed the Palace and today you can visit a stunning mixture of medieval residence, Art Deco home, and one of the few surviving 1930s Arts and Crafts gardens around.Br, D
After an early check out from the hotel, we take a trip to Chelsea Physic Garden, the oldest botanic garden in London, founded in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries for the purpose of training apprentices in identifying plants. It has a unique living collection of around 5,000 different edible, medicinal and historical plants. We depart for home early afternoon.
